I stayed when her when the vet put her to sleep. It is an individual choice and for some people it is hard to do which I appreciate. There is no right or wrong in it. I wanted to stay with her because she was my companion-in-arms. Her death was very peaceful and moving and I felt privileged to be there with her. The injection sedated her and then put her into a deep, deep sleep until she was no longer breathing. She did not have any stress and was very peaceful and content. She seemed totally at one with the universe.
